Jail Life
Nelson Mandela spent the first 18 of his 27 years in jail at Robben Island Prison off the coast of Cape Town. Nelson was confined to a small cell without a bed or plumbing and forced to perform hard labor in a lime quarry.He received minimal rations of food and fewer privileges compared to other inmates.
While in jail, Mandela obtained a bachelor of law degree from the University of London and served as a mentor to his fellow prisoners. In addition, he encouraged his fellow inmate to them to utilize nonviolent resistance to seek better treatments in the society. Notably, he smuggled out a draft of his autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom,” which was later published five years after his release.

Presidency
Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected President on 10 May 1994. During his years as the president, Mandela inspired and continued the works that brought greater acceptance of the non while race.
